The Great Original Design-
  The Design of Destruction

Dear Joanne,

The Great Original Design is the Divine process of creation that stands under all life as it unfolds in mysterious ways!  In observing nature, destruction is a part of the design of creation.

Consider the Lodgepole pine.  In 1988 thousands of acres of Lodgepole pines were destroyed by a fire that moved through Yellowstone National Park.  If you visit the site today, you will discover 6-8 foot Lodgepole pines that began new life in the face of the destruction.  In fact, the Lodgepole pine is designed that way.  Its pine cones only release its seeds when they are heated up in a fire.  From the destruction, new life arises.

Consider your body.  When you exercise and build muscle, your muscles actually tear at a cellular level..  It is in the rebuilding of these tears that your muscle is made stronger.  The muscle must be destroyed in order for new growth to take place.

Consider the Hawaiian Islands.  They were made through the destructive forces of volcanoes.  Over time, these forces have created islands rich in diversity and beauty!

These are all examples of how destruction shows up in the process of creation in the natural order of things.  Life can not help but to express.  In the midst of the destruction, new life is arising.

So, too, in our own individual lives.  We have all had moments in our lives when everything changed.  Moments when our "old" lives were destroyed.  Some examples could be the death of a loved one, the loss of a job,, the prognosis of a dis-ease, the breakdown of a relationship.  In these moments, the seed is already planted for something greater to arise.  In the continuous flow of creation, destruction is simply a waypoint on the journey.  It will pass.  And often when we have the perspective of time, we can see how something new arose within us during this time period.

The important thing to remember, whether the destruction is occurring on a macrocosmic scale (like a tsunami) or whether it is occurring on a microcosmic scale (in your own individual life) is that you turn to the power and presence that is God to support us through the situation.  As you do so,you discover that you are equipped to meet the moment in grace.  As you ask what is yours to be, say or do, wisdom guides your way.

There is no need to fear destruction.  There is no need to hide from it or push it away.  As you embrace it for what it is, an opportunity to dive deeper, you will find the gift in the moment and recognize the creative process unfolding in mysterious ways within your life.
